Google has released a new version of Sketchup, adding mostly presentation effects (see new feature list). Sketchup is the most user friendly 3D modeling tool I know - and a tool I have been using for varies projects (mostly private stuff).
» Download Sketchup 6 for free - see video tutorials
BTW: Sketchup does not include lighting features. You can see shadows, but they are calculated based on the position of the sun. You cannot add second light sources, and that is very big annoyance. This is especially irritating when you are designing interiors. The light source, being the virtual sun, is only coming through the windows, which is not that usable (especially for interiors facing North).
Here is a house I made with Sketchup 5 (the previous version). You can also see higher quality images in the Photo Gallery.

Sketchup is a really fun tool to use, I highly recommend it. But, I wish that Google would focus more on 3D than the low-tech stuff for Google Earth and the presentation junk.

Anyone else missing The Sims after seeing thse photos? ^^ Google should make a Sims-like extension pack! :P

Hey Thomas. Long time reader of your feed. Was never aware of this before. Really love the mockup you did. Regarding Vista, I'm sure there will be a small update or something to insure its compatibility.
Thomas Baekdal - Jan. 12, 2007
Hi Dave,
Thanks!
I do hope you are right about an update coming soon, because I am running Vista (BTW: I have tried installing Sketchup 6 yet, the Vista incompatibilities might be minor)
Thomas Baekdal - Mar. 8, 2007
I found an quick solution to make it run Vista. Download the installer, and run the installer in administrative mode (right click - run as administrator). Then it works.
If you get any problems while using it (I haven't), then you can go into properties and set "compatability" to XP Service Pack 2
Jorin Stalif - Apr. 6, 2007
Hello Thomas, excellent work, you have a very unique style.
You mind if I ask what kind of hardware you're using? I have a brand new Dual Core with NVIDIA card and I haven't for the life of me been able to get Sketchup to work with Vista. Its freezing up right at the "Learning Center" popup window. I keep looking around for ways to fix this issue, have searched high and low and tried everything I've read. The compatibility and admin settings seem to be working for everyone but me, so I can only guess it has to be something in the hardware.
Can't believe here we are in April and still no support from Google! I think they hate Microsoft.
Thomas Baekdal - Apr. 6, 2007
Jorin,
When I wrote this article I was using a Dell Inspiron 8600 with a NVidea graphic card. I am now using Dell Inspiron 9400 with an ATI Radeon X1400 graphic card. I have not used Sketchup for big project, but I have not experienced any problems so far.
...and yes, it is amazing that Google does not support Vista.

Jorrin
In case you haven´t solved your problem . . . I had the same thing until I changed the compatibility mode to Windows 98 and start with administrative rights turned on . .. . strangely enough this worked for me after everything else failed
Andre Fernades - Jul. 24, 2007
Hi there,
I got exactly the same problem as Jorrin. After trying everything that I saw and thought that would solve the problem, I tried the Jo proposed and suprinsingly it worked. I really don't understand why, but it worked and that is what matters.
thaks for the help

I'ma long time fan and user of Google Sketchup (been using it for just over a year now) and gretaly enjoyed using it, especialy on my old machine. I recently purchased a new machine (a celeron m advent notebook, intergrated graphics) which, unfourtianatly for sketchup, runs windows vista. This is a great source of annoyance, as I had to spend about a week trawling for soloutions, downloading new drivers of intel for the graphics chip, exc. When all of that was done, it gave the highly irrating situation the next day of inserting a blank white space inbetween the toolbars and the actual model viewing area. The effect of this is that it shifts everything down, so instead of clicking on something to selesct/draw.erase/paint/exc. I cant click on the object or line, but instead have to mess around clicking above the object or line, to compensate for this drift. I recently tried uninstalling and reinstalling sketchup, and ot worked fine again after that...
... for about a day, because the next day I reopened the model I was working on, and the evil bar of nothingness had reappeared. It takes about 10x as long to do a project. Please fix it Google.
Though I wouldn't be suprised if Google hated Microsoft, seeing as it has a pretty sweet relationship with Apple.
TulsaDavid - Jul. 28, 2007
Thanks for the Vista info on running Sketchup in Windows 98 Compatibility mode. That is the only way it worked for me as well. I've installed it on a HP Pavillion laptop, dual core, NVIDIA GeForce 7600 graphics, and it froze exactly as Jorin Stalif mentioned (post #7 - Apr. 6, 2007).
Thanks, Jo, for the post.

If anyone can help me I would really appretiate it.. Thank you
Thomas Baekdal - Aug. 8, 2007
Shawn, I do not know what could cause this. Have you tried reinstalling the program?
chrisbenjy - Aug. 20, 2007
shawn, I have the same problem, and im also running vista, you can uninstall SketchUp and Install it again and it will work, but you have to reinstall everytime you turn on your computer which is anoying, I've played around with all the settings trying to sort it out, but nothing worked. anyone got a solution?
elias - Aug. 21, 2007
Open the program, then open Window menu, then Preferences, OpenGL,
then deselect hardware acceleration. it should work..good luck
Chrisbenjy - Aug. 21, 2007
that worked great thanks, but wat i dont understand is why it works to start off with but then doesnt, anyway thanks alot = ]
elias - Aug. 21, 2007
I'm glad that it worked for u. to answer ur question ,SketchUp relies on OpenGL 1.5 compliant graphics card and drivers, and several graphics cards don't have Windows Vista compatible drivers yet.therefore it's important to continually check with the graphics card manufacturer for new drivers.if u do that, u won't have this problem.

solved the problem:
get hold of a copy of XP.

I had issues with saving files from Google Sketchup and I am running windows vista. The program opens fine and when I select save (and most other File options that require a dialog bok) from the file menu Google Sketchup crashes. After trying many things(running it in Win 98 mode was one thing) running it in Windows XP (service pack 2) compatibility mode was the solution. After this saving files and using other File options no longer crashed Sketchup.
vic - May. 10, 2008
Every time I tried to install GS it stops right at the installation process and gives me three options: report, close, ok..I am running Vista SP1...any ideas...
thanks

Larissa, I use to have the same problem as well but that was fixed by adding more memory. Also make sure you have powerful graphic card (i use NVIDIA Ge)
fayebelle - Jul. 18, 2008
i installed sketch up pro 6 in my laptop, like nathan king has encountered, when i select a face it selects the back face or other entity. it is so hard to erase, push/pull and offset.. because it selects another face. i tried all of the suggestions. worse thing is, i couldn't uninstall the program.
please help
sophies - Aug. 7, 2008
thomas, i would like to know did you use any rendering programme in the sketchup drawings above? if yes, which rendering goes the best with sketchup (if recommand?) and how long it took you to accomplished this drawing?
i used sketchup a couple times for my presentation. and wish to get better on that.
thanx for taking time anwering!!
Thomas Baekdal - Aug. 8, 2008
Sophies, I did not use any rendering program, everything you see is done from within Sketchup. I did think about moving it into a "real" 3D program, to make the lighting look better, but never came around to it (+ I have no idea how to do it in the first place).
The entire thing took about 3 days to make. The overall structure of the house was relatively easy, but I spent more than two days just creating all the objects inside the house.
sophie - Aug. 8, 2008
thanks thomas!
i am so glad to know that i don't need rendering to make it more picture-like. i did try some rendering programmes before, it was time consuming and frustrated.
three days is very decent to come up with the detailed model you made. that says i can do it too......
i found your site while searching information learning sketchup. forgive me not yet go thru every thing in your site. i wonder have you use sketchup for other creations? such as products design?

Hey, i have a problem, every time i try to draw something it get full of blue red and green spots,it gets annoying:(
Vasco - Oct. 29, 2008
Hello. I successfully installed GS in Vista 3 days ago. So far, it's running smoothly. All you need is to install it with different compatibility modes:
1. right-click the installer. In the 3rd Tab (Compatibility) there's a list where you can select it to run XP compatible. Install GS.
2. in the executable or desktop short cut, you do the same, but this time select Windows 98/ME compatibility.
Voilá.

I have just been told that it is not compatible with Windows Vista ?!?!? ... what kind of idiot releases a new version 14 days before Vista comes out - and not ensures that it is compatible.
