Yesterday, Jared Spool talked about that MyCokeRewards.com (the place where you used the numbers you find on the caps on coke bottles) doesn't work on mobile phones. As he said:
Now, what are the odds that people drinking coke would be closer to their phone than their PC? Probably pretty good.- Jared Spool
The internet has changed... have you?

I'm willing to bet that MyCokeRewards.com is a good example of a certain kind of web site that's actually nothing to do with good design in the sense that Jared Spool understands that term.- Jonathan
I think you are right about that.
I think the main problem with big brands is that they got big during the age of traditional marketing. It actually used to work to make a site like MyCokeRewards.com. But that time no longer exists...

You can send the codes via text message to COKE (2653) after registering your phone on the site.

The clue is the brand. Coke is the ultimate brand, and therefore the ultimate client to have if you're web agency. So are the likes of Nike and Sony. Such companies manage their agency rosters via their brand managers and marketing departments. They do not have in-house web development teams because, like almost everything else the company does, that's outsourced.
The fundamental approach an agency will take when being invited to pitch for these companies will be to deliver the most visually-effective site possible. This is because brand managers and marketeers don't traditionally think in any other way. So, nothing at all will be allowed to stand in the way of good eye candy. Indeed, because large brands pay very little for web development work (they know they can basically name their price) doing anything else for them - like mobile device compliance - is pretty much impossible.
With that in mind, check out branded web properties by Sony, Nike or Vodafone. You'll find triumphs of style over substance almost every time.
PS: Gotta love the double-think on the myCokeRewards signup form: they call the CAPTCHA "your security key." Mmmm...
