I am not that particular interested in sport. I mean, I like sailing and skiing which I do when I got time for it. But there is one thing that has always intrigued me - the 24 hour endurance race "Le Mans".
I watch Le Mans every single year - and not only occasionally during the day - no, I watch 24 hours of Le Mans. I know how this sounds, every single woman in the world now thinks I am a geek - but who cares, it's Le Mans, it doesn't have to make sense.
When you put so much effort into a single task, you want to have great tools to work with - and the Le Mans website isn't one of them. So, for the last 6 years I have been making a web application to solve my need for information.
I wanted a single and usable location to get:
I want to know more than the TV commenter's - or at the very least - just as much. When they says; "I think that is the leading Audi with a punctured tire", I can say "No, on my screen it clearly says that it is the second one with McNish in it".
...and this is how it looks:

Close-ups

Of course, the above screens are still just the concept for this year's Le Mans. I will not be able to make the final version until a few hours before the race (the source material is not available yet). The Le Mans application is based on the data coming from Lemans.org (the official website), and Club24 (the official Le Man race club).
There is always a ton of problems converting and styling the website data, and last minute changes (even drastic ones) are expected. Last year I had to change 60% of the backend system just a few hours before the race started - but hey, it is a long race and it is time well spent.
This is why I love the Web - Everything is possible!
Note: The Le Mans application is not made public due to copyright restrictions from A.C.O. (the organization behind Le Mans). This is strictly a personal thing. Sorry!
If A.C.O. wants to use this as part of the Club24 experience I will be more than happy to help you with that.
Updated: June 15, 2007: Version 2 (beta) released
You can download a "light" version that is not a graphical rich as the "full" version, nor does it feature the content "wizary" seen in the screenshots above. But, most importantly it runs from a single HTML file (no data, data-prosessing or images are manipulated by my servers - and thus there is no copyright issues).
Download version 2 of the light version, which features a 2 column layout with Chronos, official race timer, Entry lists, Race Events, News, Photos, and Radio Le Mans - all running live. You can even change the language!

Download version 1 of the light version, which features a 2 and 3 column layout with Chronos, Entry lists, Race Events, News, Photos, and Radio Le Mans - all running live

You can also download this version, where the logo and the timer has been removed to give more room for the Chronos and Race Events

This is for personal use only
Foo - May. 30, 2007
too bad it's not legal to dispense, although i would love it if you did! Great job on this though...would have been cool to see this on my 46" 1080p LCD
jayson - May. 30, 2007
Wow - that is hardcore. The people who run Le Mans should jump on this. Even make it a paid "Le Mans Insider" feature on their website if they have to.
Nice work!
oneighturbo - May. 30, 2007
amazing. amazing. amazing.
scary how close this is to the thinking i've wanted to be a part of. Hire me! ;)
I had the opportunity to work on Mercedes-AMG work and have wanted to tap into the race data from the DTM series and bring it to the online environment, esp to those of us not living near these tracks.
Great work Baekdal!
Did you ever take a look at

Le Mans Fan! - May. 31, 2007
I just thought I should make it known that there are a whole bunch of us Le Mans fans out there that think it SUCKS that A.C.O have prohibited the public release of this app.
They have a HUGE opportunity to revolutionise the coverage of the race at NO COST TO THEM - and they pull this copyright rubbish!!!
What are they thinking!?
Thomas Baekdal - May. 31, 2007
I totally agree with you. I too would really like to be able to make this public - and not nessesarely my web application. Any web application would do nicely.
Club24 does have a live bar, it is not nearly as content rich, but it does give you live update throughout the race.
Thomas Baekdal - May. 31, 2007
OneEightTurbo, Yes, DTM, F1, MotoGP, WRC, they all need some system to give people live updates over the internet.
And, the Tour Tracker looks great - thanks for the link!
JS - May. 31, 2007
Thomas, couldn't you make the source code available under a GPL License so those with enough motivation and skill might be able to implement something similar. Here in the US we get spotty coverage on the Speed Channel and only when some crappy NASCAR show doesn't trump it. This tool would be invaluable to fans of the race who don't get coverage like they do in Europe.
Thomas Baekdal - May. 31, 2007
JS, Hmmm.... it is not a bad idea. I will see what I can do (no promises as much of the code is also what "powers" many of my other projects).
tekuza - May. 31, 2007
Thomas, do you mind telling us what language you used to code this awesome application. I develop with asp.net and I'm curious what technologies you used to create this app. Thanks.
Thomas Baekdal - May. 31, 2007
Update: I am making a "light" version for download. One that will keep you all up-to-date during the race - but without the backend rendering.
Stay tuned :)
Thomas Baekdal - May. 31, 2007
Tekuza, Actually it is pretty old-school - ASP+ AJAX + CSS + Javascript made effects (and PNG for transparent effects). I wanted to make it in Expression Blend (WPF/silverlight thing), but I still learning how (and this calls for rapid development).
tekuza - May. 31, 2007
Awesome Thomas. Thanks for replying. I'm impressed you could create such a nice interface with asp classic. And thanks for making the lite version.
Thomas Baekdal - May. 31, 2007
Pre-release of the light version is available for download.
Note: It is a prerelease because the 2007 data sources is not yet available, so I used the old ones from 2006 to make sure it works. I will put up an updated version when Le Mans open up the new data pages.
Ken Martin - Jun. 1, 2007
Thomas, I appreciate all of your efforts to produce such a great resource for the fans of LeMans 24.
In regards to the statistical downloads that are available, is there a way to easily convert to English?
Thank you.
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 3, 2007
Hi Terry, Thanks!
I am located in Denmark (Europe) - Contact Information
thomas Baekdal - Jun. 3, 2007
Ken, Not in the light version (it just displays the exact page from lemans.org) - and their english version is - well, not entirely english.
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 4, 2007
Updated the light version again (they changed the url to the news page - causing the system to stop updating). It still lacks the Race Event data (I cannot add this before lemans.org creates the page on their server...)
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 4, 2007
Updated again: Now supports more than just IE7 and Firefox. The only browser it (theoretically) doesn't support is IE 5 and IE 5.5.
...it doesn't support ancient relics either - that is IE4, old Netscape and other irrelevant junk (don't blame me for that).
Luis - Jun. 13, 2007
Wow this is great!
I'm at the office where I use a PC, but do you know if this is supported by Safari (OSX) on a Mac?
Thanks,
-luis
Ken Martin - Jun. 13, 2007
Hi Thomas - are you on site at LeMans or working at home?
Ken Martin - Jun. 13, 2007
Too bad - I'm at LeMans working for Speed - the American motorsports network, and was hoping you might be on site.
I enjoy your web application, congratulations on creating such a useful tool. Regards, Ken
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 13, 2007
Ken, Thanks, and yeah - sorry for not being on-site. Unfortunately I got a number of big projects that needs my attention. June and July is always a busy time for me.
BTW: I am fiddling with a new concept the American Le Mans Series. I do not have anything to show just yet (I have to get those project out of the way). It is, however going to be much better than what you see here.
There are a lot of people who are interesting in a "Live tracker" that goes beyond a simple website - and many of those have mentioned the American Le Mans.
I will be happy to keep you up to date on the progress of that application (if you are interested).
Thanks!
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 14, 2007
Final version uploaded
I have made the final changes to the light edition. All the race data is from this year's event (updated live)... and you can select to see race events for a specific car.
oneighturbo - Jun. 14, 2007
Wow. Thanks for the development. Been using all day and just updated to final.
Goes great with the radiolemans audio feed
Heres to a great Le Mans!
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 14, 2007
Oneeightturbo, Thanks
I just fixed a small bug - it didn't update the timer box correctly (it does now).
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 14, 2007
Argh... I forget to add some javascript code to the second live tracker (lemans1.zip).
I have corrected the problem and uploaded a fixed file (sorry about that!)
vincent - Jun. 14, 2007
great job.
wish to watch it live from Australia, but this is something close enough from the live action in le man
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 15, 2007
Thanks Vincent!
Here in Denmark I am fortunately able to see the full 24 hour race on TV.
BTW: I just noticed that Google Earth has high-res satelite pictures of Le Mans. No cars though - but it gives you a great view of the track.
thierry - Jun. 15, 2007
Is there a way to have it in french? nice job!
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 15, 2007
Thierry, Sure!
I will make a french version this evening (stay tuned)
Thomas - Jun. 15, 2007
Thierry, I have uploaded a new Le Mans tracker (version 2 beta). It has a much nicer interface and more content (photos, entry list, radio) - and gives you the ability to choose french language.
(download link above)
philippe - Jun. 15, 2007
hello,
your programm is very well, but i haven't find how to choose the language. Can you help me to choose french version please.
thanks, philippe
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 15, 2007
Philippe,
You can only choose the language with version 2 (the first download link). The language settings is placed just below the menu items.
Brian - Jun. 15, 2007
Thanks for the great app!!
How about adding a button to stream the audio from: http://globecast.workscast.com/
philippe - Jun. 16, 2007
You can only choose the language with version 2 (the first download link). The language settings is placed just below the menu items
escuse me but on my pc with IE i haven't the button français /english. I see it just a few moment and no more i can't select it .
thanks a lot
philippe
philippe - Jun. 16, 2007
escuse me, i have find the solution F11 so the picture of time dont hide the button
thierry - Jun. 16, 2007
Thanks a lot thomas! very nice job!
thierry - Jun. 16, 2007
for me the radio link doesn't work, but this one does:
mms://stream022.octopustv.com/globecast
if this can help.
Did you hear about a webcast of the race?
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 16, 2007
Brian - The radio button is already a feature of version 2 :)
Philippe - Ahh... yes. In order to remove the blue background, I had to place a green box above the timer (and it is 250px height from the buttom).
Thierry, Thanks! ... The radio button works fine at my end (on three different computers - one of them a Mac). But, you link works too. I will change it.
BTW: I updated the link to the Race Event just a few hours ago.
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 16, 2007
Version 2 updated:
1: The timer no longer obscures the language buttons
2: Radio link changed
Jeremy Guilvard - Jun. 16, 2007
Hi Thomas,
Thank you very much for your website.
I am french and I am in England for a couple of months, I could not go back in France for this race. It is the first year, that I can not attend the 24 hours race of Le Mans, I was very very disappointed, but with your website, I think my weekend will be very better.
Thank you very much.
If someday you want to come in France for this famous race, and yes it is, send me a Email.

Bob Coppitters - Jun. 16, 2007
Hello Thomas !
You are doing a very great job with this fantastic race !!!
This year, here in Belgium, we can not watch the race on the telly because it is not transmitted by non-paying networks ... !?!
Do you know the existance of a web link on which we can watch the race live on the computer ?
Let us know !
Very best regards
Bob
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 16, 2007
Hey jeremy, Thanks,
BTW: I can also recommend Club24 web camera's - If you are not already a member. Mix the web camera feeds, with Radio Lemans and my Live Tracker - and you will be able to follow the race very closely (the first web camera is the TV feed - the second on eis currently a map of the track - but it has been showing feeds from MotorTV earlier today. The last two are fixed on a specific section of the track)
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 16, 2007
Bob, I do not know of any Internet TV feeds available Belgium. In Denmark we can see it via TV2 internet TV (but that is not available outside this country).
But, use the web cameras from Club24 - it is not TV, but it does display the TV feed every 10 seconds.
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 16, 2007
And... this is how it looks for real:

BTW: As you can see I am also using the light version - instead of the rich version. It takes much longer to make the full version - and with all the work I did on the light version I simply ran out of time...
I am using a modified light version, which includes a bit more information than the public version - and a special webcam version (on the right). But, as with the full version I cannot give the extra stuff (It is for Club24 members only)
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 16, 2007
Grrr... the race is started - and leman.org doesn't update the Chronos or the Race Events... Stay tuned.
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 16, 2007
Updated all light versions - they changed the URL to the race data
...and they have not updated Race Events yet - but hey, maybe the Le Mans web team is not working weekends :)
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 16, 2007
BTW: Still not working. The Le Mans web team is only updating the Chronos for french version... (switch to french for the moment)
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 16, 2007
If somebody happens to know the Le Mans web team - please call them and ask them to update their website - we are 30 minutes into the race, and it Race Events is empty (despite the many things that has already happened) - and the English Chronos is still showing warmup by default (grrrrr...)
Henrik - Jun. 16, 2007
i use the Le Mans Tracker. But why does the Chrones list return to the warmup times everytime the page update?
Creat site though :-)
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 16, 2007
Updated:
Change the data source to the public data from Club24's website (solved the problem with the Chronos). The Le Man web team is still not updating the Race Events...
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 16, 2007
Henrik, read my comments above. The Le Mans web team is apparently asleep.
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 16, 2007
BTW: Download the latest file to see the a working Chronos window (change the url - see comment above)
thierry - Jun. 16, 2007
to watch a webcast you can download tvu player at:
then choose the 53060 WHEELS channel in English
works fine
oneighturbo - Jun. 16, 2007
ha, just came over to say that the :: Chronos wasn't switching over to the race tab..
thanks for the update!
Great racing so far!
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 16, 2007
Hey Thierry, Thanks for the link!
OneEighturbo: He he :)
BTW: Here is a picture from my home office

...and the picture from my livingroom:

Anonymous - Jun. 16, 2007
Thanx Thomas B. for this site & Thierry 4 live link.
Brgds.J.J.
henrik - Jun. 16, 2007
Hej, jeg bruger lemans1 på en laptop med 1024x768. Det gør at chronos "beskæres" i siden. Er det muligt at kunne justere de to kolonner i siden så man kan få hele enten i chrones eller race events/news?
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 16, 2007
BTW: In case you are wondering why the safety car is still on the track (after the Audi Crash)... It is because they are fixing the fence, which we can see on the Club24 web cams (It is funny when you know more than the TV commentators - he he)

Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 16, 2007
Still working with the fence that was crushed by the number 3 Audi...

Sean Preston - Jun. 16, 2007
Hi Thomas,
Brilliant apps - have installed them and they're working beautifully. Also followed the TVU link and have successfully installed.
I notice that your webcam stills as well. 53060 WHEELS is okay but is frustrating due to the number of adverts and hasd moved onto other event coverage. Are you able to supply the link/ info for grabbing the Le Mans webcams?
Thanks - Sean.
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 16, 2007
Sean, Thanks!
I cannot give you the direct link to the webcams - but you can see them here (You need to be a member of Club24 to see them)
Sean Preston - Jun. 16, 2007
Thanks Thomas,
Located the url for these earlier, but think the Le Mans web team might be asleep again! There is no submit button at the bottom of the form. Grrrr....
Will keep trying - thanks for your help.
Enjoy the race...!
Sean
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 16, 2007
Sean, I had trouble finding the submit button too. It is not a button, but the red text below the form reading "Sumbit the subscription and go the payment step"
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 16, 2007
Updated version 2
- Lemans.org changed the photo URL. Download the latest version to see them.
Sean Preston - Jun. 16, 2007
Thomas - brilliant. Thanks very much for pointing that out, woudl never have spotted that link. Now signed up and accessing the webcam tv...
Thanks for your help! Sean
Mardy R - Jun. 16, 2007
Hey, guys, where do you find the Le Mans Tracker. Can you post a link to it. I want to get more info on the action at Le Mans. Whats going on with the Peugeot, one car is falling far back, I know its due to a wheel bearing.
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 16, 2007
Mardy, you mean besides the 3 download links in the article above? :)
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 16, 2007
BTW: The only thing I know about the Peugeot is that they are having a lot of problems with the wheel bearing (as you already know).

I have received 2 emails this evening asking me how many page requests and bandwidth my Le Mans tracker generates. I did some analyzing and this was what I found:
Page request during the 24 hour race:
Looking at the actual network traffic (during 24 hours):
So my Le Mans Tracker is about twice as heavy than using the lemans.org website
With Web Cams:
If we look at my light tracker with web cams (the one I am using at here) vs. using lemans.org/club24 websites:
Again, about twice as much data is requested from the servers.
My personal setup:
Of course I am using more than one tracker. I got 2 modified trackers and 2 sets of 4 web cams - and that does generate a slightly more traffic:
Still it is only using slightly more than twice as much data than if I was using lemans.org directly.
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 16, 2007
Hmmm... We are not even halfway trough the race... and I am feeling sleepy - and it is not helping that nothing serious/interesting has happened for a long time :)

thierry - Jun. 16, 2007
1999 was a great year, then...
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 16, 2007
Ahhh... yes, that was a interesting year. Although I wouldn't want to be the driver in the Mercedes...
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 16, 2007
??? Club24's web cams has stopped working (for 45 minutes now...) - grrrrr...

Hi Thomas,
Thanks for creating and sharing such a beautiful product. I was totally bored with the official tracking service. Fortunately, just a short while ago, Google helped me discover yours, which is so much more informative.
With regards from Dar es Salaam,
DS.

hello there!
thierry - Jun. 17, 2007
oops... forgot to put my name!
David Sawe - Jun. 17, 2007
Most welcome Thomas,
However, I'm sorry but I didn't understand your statement of:
"Mumsie", Nej, jeg sov ikke - men det var tæt på...
Could you provide a translation into either English or Francais please?
DS.
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 17, 2007
Hmm... too bad (or great news if you are from france)

BTW: I want Aston Martin to win, so...
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 17, 2007
David, the "Mumsie" part wasn't directed at you. It was a response to "Mumsie" (who wrote in Danish above).
But, it is basically saying "No I wasn't sleeping [when the Audi crashed] - but I could have been"
(very bad translation - I am not thinking straight after 19 hours of racing, and being somewhat awake for now 25 hours. Eventhough I did dose off between 3 and 6 AM European time)
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 17, 2007
BTW: Here are two pictures from Peugeot's pit before and after Audi's crash - suddenly everyone is watching TV :)

Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 17, 2007
He he - Police speed check?

The speeding fines for driving in excess of 320 Km/H on a public road (in France) is:
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 17, 2007
...and all the camera people is standing outside - and cannot see a thing :)

Web cams are fun :)
thierry - Jun. 17, 2007
thank's Thomas! It was very nice to follow the race with your program. See you next year!
Thomas Baekdal - Jun. 17, 2007
Le Mans 2007 is over...

Le Mans is over and I need some sleep :)
But, it was a fun race, and was everything we all like about Le Mans. 4 drivers from Denmark made it in the top 3 (in varies classes), which is great since I am from Denmark. My favorite team (Aston Martin) won too :)
Thanks to all of you who visited this page before and during Le Mans (4,616 people).
I hope that my light tracker was useful, and that I can offer the same (or a better version) next year!
This year, there was a much less technical problems with lemans.org. They had some problems by the start of the race (they didn't update their race data until 1 hour and 20 minutes into the race).
The webcams worked most of the time. I have recorded a 9.8% failure rate - with the longest period being about 52 minutes. The web cams proved to be extremely valuable this year. It helped me stay ahead of the TV commentators 4-5 times during the race (which is fun).
And most importantly, the web cams was faster than the Live TV pictures - allowing me to get a 2 sec warning before something happened on the track (on TV) :)
I am, however, disappointed by the time it took the Le Mans web team to bring "LIVE" data online. Chronos and Race Events were seriously behind during the entire race. Sometimes it took more than 20 minutes before a LIVE event was visible. The Timer more accurate. It took about 4 minutes from e.g. the safe car to come on to the track to it was visible online.
I simply do not understand how it can take that long to update some data (unless they are doing it manually). A few seconds for the databases to synchronize is acceptable - several minutes are not.
But, even with the delays and technical problems, we should congratulate the Le Mans web team. 24 Hours of Le Mans is a far better internet experience than most other races in the world. The wealth of information is very good, the web cams were brilliant, and overall they handled a monstrous task (probably with very little sleep).
Again, thank you all for a great Le Mans - Now I am going to get some sleep :)

David Sawe - Jun. 17, 2007
Hi Thomas,
Pity the 24hrs came to have such a low-key ending with all that rain...
Looking forward to sharing next year's race with you from start to finish!
Stay well in the meantime,
DS
Baekdal.com's Le Mans viewer allows you to see the Chronos (standings), News, Race Events, Photos, and the Entry list in a single interface. It is a great way to keep up-to-date with the event from qualification to the 24 hour race.
It uses the publicly available race data from the official Le Mans website.
Status: June 14, 16:24:00 CET
Tracker changed (again): Race Events now displays English data on the English page. Lemans.org have added the wrong link to their page.
How to use:
Download the tracker, unzip the file and double-click on the HTML file inside it.
Note: requires IE7, Firefox 2.
Several TV and radio stations stream the event over the internet - including:
Note: Baekdal.com is in no way affiliated with Le Mans. This is purely a personal coverage of the race.

Wow, this is awesome! Imagine this on a large monitor.
