Holographics + Augmented Reality = Cool

Published: October 17, 2008 in future » experience by Thomas Baekdal

Ivan Tihienko has created a very impressive concept for how we can use the computer, without having to sit in front of it. He is envisioning a holographic projection system that place the projected image in front of us as we go about our business.

This is augmented reality taken to the extremes.

Take a look at how it works in the video below; including the ability to share the experience with other people, managing your email, GPS directions directly on the street, listening to music etc...

That is so awesome. Maybe if we're lucky thing like this will be available in 50-100 years. It's kinda hard though unless you use a special pavement on have a projector somewhere on you. I can image that game thing in a mall or something though that is in one special place, but it would be so useful to be able to have that stuff.

There is a problem though that you might want personal messages to remain a secret so a better idea would be to somehow build it into a pair of sunglasses, similar to the camera sunglasses concept you wrote about. This is undiscovered territory nowadays, but I so see this coming. And the weirdest thing is by then the 3 generation will take it as granted and not imagine how we could not live without all of it!

I love this kind of thing and I've now watched the video about five times running.

Just gotta get this off my chest: fist what it is about mystery meat that it *always* appears when people envision future UI designs? It's like a sort of disease. It used to instantly invalidate any attempt at convincing me of what a UI would be like in the future, but it's such a common gaffe that I just ignore it and look at the other stuff now.

Like a lot of similar envisioning, it works on a "big idea" which in this case is concentric circles. While that sort of makes sense here (you stand in the middle of the circles), the execution is too enslaved to the idea. I would have thought that for some things at least, a zooming UI would have been better, given the fact that you have an infinite canvas.

Also notable is the use of very old UI: qwerty keyboard, and what is basically a WIMP construct. I think that's quite good though (I'm sure that 100 years from now we'll still be using qwerty keyboards for text input).

I would imagine that any implementation of this would be as a HUD and not a projection for a number of reasons (external light problems, surface reflection/refraction). More than one person sharing a HUD is certainly an interesting idea when combined with near-field networking.

All in all, this is cool stuff though.

Yes, we definitely need some kind of projector revolution.

It reminds me of something I saw on TV a few years back. They were using some kind of x-ray "beam" to project an image upon a surface in another room. I cannot remember how it was done though... I can only remember that it was huge (the machine was the size of the room). If that kind of technology could be made portable... and safe (which is probably a problem with x-rays)... then it could project the image from your phone... from within your pocket. The accelerometer and a mini-gyro would know how to turn and project the image.

Of course, I think that the wall itself was pretty special... so this might not be practical... even in theory...

BTW: I do agree with you (Jonathan) about the Mystery Meat Navigation problems...

Wonderfull stuff.

Great video showing a nice idea.

"Maybe if we're lucky thing like this will be available in 50-100 years"

Thats very pessimistic.

We have all the technology for this now, its just very crude.

A personal head-mounted display giving us an Augmented Reality view of the world can be made today. *Are* made today.

They are just big, heavy, and not very well sycned with the real world.

However, tracking technology is improving all the time, the Gallio array of satalites will give us much better GPS, and WiFi max will help with the comminications.

We have transparent organic LED screens now, which offer the posibility for optical-see-though glass's.

Frankly, the whole field just needs a bit of investment.

Our AR future is coming soon, and your absolutely right, once it his, we wont be able to live without it.

oh, and the answer to the problem of public/private overlays is easy;

Have it like IRC channels

Each channel is a layer onto the world, like a photoshop layer, and you can login/out at wiill and have many at once.

Some channels can be passworded.

ps. Anyone watch Denno Coil?

Thats the most realistic depiction of augmented reality near-future, imho.

BTW: Yousef I think you are spot on about the 3rd generation taking something like this as granted.

One of my friends 3-year-old kid has practically taken over his dad's iPod Touch.

Imagine when he turns 20... In his mind, things like multi-touch was the old stuff, and always being able to go online from any device is as natural as having electricity. ...and he will see augmented reality the same way as we see the personal computers.

Denno Coil? Never heard about it... have to look into that... I assume you mean this?

You're all talking about the future of augmented reality, but what I most obviously see is that those people must be making absolute fools of themselves.

The UI has clearly been edited in afterwards, so the people must be waving their arms around and playing air hockey like people play air guitar. I'm wondering why passers by took so little notice of the two air hockey-miming men.

Aku, I was actually wondering about the same... but hey, if you want to talk about looking like a fool, you might remember my monkey movie. People thought I was absolutely insany when they saw me dressed up like that (they were probably right though...)

Ahhh... the things we do for science, or demonstrations... or just being silly :)

Yes, that was what I was talking about Denno Coil is an Anime with a (imo) pretty realistic depiction of a future where AR is commonplace and used as universaly as we use computers today.

Its a nice story, with good humour, that wraps itself up in one season, allthough it does get a lot more sci-fi near the end.

The first eppisode of Denno Coil, roughly translated, has the title= "Children of the Glasses"

Which I think is quite a wonderfull phrase for perhapes what the next generation will be.

"You're all talking about the future of augmented reality, but what I most obviously see is that those people must be making absolute fools of themselves."

No moreso then those listening to MP3 players, on mobile phones, or playing their DS's are today.

Is texting on a phone really less foolish then waving hands in the air?

It only looks foolish till its commonplace.

That said, I'm skeptical of any big hand movements being needed for typeing. It would more likely be very subtle.

And yes, of course this is just a concept video.

Real projectors wouldnt be very visible during the day, so I suspect AR will go more down then "panel then glass's" route.

Its still a lovely concept, however.

Especialy the projected arrows for route-finding. That looks very practical.

Cool concept. Espscially the air hockey game. I'm currently watching Denno Coil (spelled "Dennou Coil") on a site called broadcaster.com. So far every episode has had English subtitle=s. I had been watching it on video.aol.com, but very few English subs. lots of French, and Russian, believe it or not! The story focus is on a specific area of the tech, and really could be expanded to include what we all precieve is going to come when AR hits mainstream. Still, it's a GREAT story!

How about instead of a projector, we use sort of a visor? Glasses or whatever, augmented reality can make this a reality, slap a marker on your hand, put the glasses on, and your desktop shows up.
