Ronel Jordaan's Rock Cushions

Published: February 20, 2008 in design » interior by Thomas Baekdal

In late January I wrote about the cool looking rock cushions "LivingStones". Then Sian Eliot (from Willowlamp Studio) commented that the South African designer "Ronel Jordaan" has been making rock cushions for years. Naturally I had to investigate the case.

I looked up Ronel Jordaan's website, contacted her, and found that she had indeed made rock cushions since December 2004. Not only that, but Ronel's rock cushions is also way better looking than Livingstones. When you compare the two, you will be absolutely amazed how real Ronel's "rock cushions" look.

Ronel Jordaan's cushions are also completely hand-made, hand-dyed, hand-carded, made out of felt, and have no stitches. What you end up with is a much better result. It is not several pieces of textile put together and made to look like a rock. It has a more complete feel.

You can get the rocks in several colors like cream, pale brown, pale grey, mid grey, dark grey, charcoal, brown, and DK brown. And, they come in several sizes ranging from small 35x30x18cm (14x12x7 inches) to gigantic 65x65x35cm (26x26x14 inches).

So, if you just want to be cool then there is always LivingStones' copy of the real thing. But if you want the "Sub-Zero Coolness" then you have to get some of Ronel Jordaan's rock cushions!

(Thanks Sian for the tip!)

Those are amazing! They do look really realistic, and like you said, better than LivingStones as far as realism.

I have just opened a cafe up on the mid north coast of Australia called beachstone cafe. The name came from the beachstone's found on the beach where the cafe is situated and they look exactly like the beautiful stones ronel jordaan creates. When I was doing the interior design for the cafe I purchased the pebble strings and hung four of them in a row as a soft sculpture. Everyday we recieve comments about how realistic, organic and perfect they are. Thankyou Ronel for creating something so special and unique.

You keep using the word "is", shouldn't you be using the word "are"? The cushions truly look amazing and the photos are nice.

But I was highly distracted by your grammar :

"Ronel's rock cushions IS also way better looking than Livingstones."

Make that:

"Ronel's rock cushions ARE also way better looking than Livingstones."

I'm sure the people of Brighton (England) would love these, seeing the cushions bear a resemblance to the pebbles on the beach. How about advertising them here with the heading "Brighton Beach Cushions"!

I would love one in my meditation room but they are so-o-o out of range in price for me even a small one. Too bad us retired folks can't have one.
