Top Banana - super cool web based video editing

MIX07 is currently taking place in Vegas, and with it comes an enormous amount of new ideas, technologies, and concepts. One of them is a very cool video editing application - in Silverlight - called Top Banana (code name).

Take a look for yourself:

BTW: He is running Vista on a MacBook Pro at a Microsoft conference - funny.

I must admit that two years ago I didn't think that browser based systems could go this far, and I a sense it hasn't. This is what you can do when you go beyond the browser - and use plug-ins like Flash or in this case Silverlight.

I am not exactly saying that HTML and JavaScript is out-of-date - for most websites that still works quite well. But in terms of web applications and putting the OS on the web, then neither the browser nor technological abilities of HTML/JavaScript is up to the task. It is not fast enough, it doesn't have rich media capabilities or any advanced UI elements.

Of course, all the things we are seeing with the new Flash, Silverlight and Apollo are very basic stuff. We are heading in a very interesting direction - but we are also a long way from the capabilities of any of the productivity applications.

It is still in the realm of hobby use or small business - and there is a huge step from here to the next level.

The way I see it is that interactive media is given a new direction with SilverLight. We are going in an productive way and it's a really a huge step to achieve the browser based OS. Though things are in basic shape, they are interesting and a lot of work has been done to achieve this stage.

Indeed, we also need to remember is that most of the things being showcases at the moment is not designed to be used - productivity was not really the goal. Instead they are mostly designed to look good (and many of them do).

I expect thing to change somewhat 6 months to a year from now. Then the showcase experimenting is becoming less important - and the same people and companies turn to making something that gets things done.

The reason why I am excited about it is because we are seeing a lot of interaction experiments. Some are cool, while some are just for show-off.

With Top Banana, it is mostly in the sphere of fancyness, coupled with some elements of coolness. I would not be able to make any of the 20-25 movies I make per year with it. For that I need much more precise control over the movie + the live-preview needs to be much bigger.

For instance: how do you mix the movie clips, in a way that the beat of the music is in sync with the clips?

Where can i download top banana? or other great silverlight applications? For me this sensation seems like a scam.

We haven't seen it for real, and in years nothing like it has been avilible on internet??
