Gumball 3000 Car Wrap.

By Thomas Baekdal | Sunday, May 02, 2010 | Section: design

Earlier last month I was asked whether I had any ideas for a car wrap design for a 2009 Rolls Royce Phantom. The wrap was for one of the participants of this year's Gumball 3000, who wanted to stand out a bit.

That sounded like a fun project, so I created these:

Unfortunately, my designs weren't selected, instead they chose this really cool design, which makes me a bit jealous. But hey, that's life. It was still a fun project :)

BTW: For those who do not know what Gumball 3000 is: It's a little event, where a bunch of really rich dudes put together each year. They take some of the most hideously expensive cars for a little drive over 3000 miles in 7 days. Usually involving many speeding tickets, parties, and everything else you can possibly imagine.

The rally began in London earlier today, before taking them to Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Montreal, and Toronto before finally rounding off in New York by the end of the week - basically, 3000 miles across some of the finest scenery in Europe, Scandinavia, Canada, and the US.

If you wonder how they are going to drive from Stockholm to Toronto? They are cheating. They are loading all the cars into Antonov AN-124 cargo planes - which alone probably costs more than what most people earn in a month.

Here is a video from the start in London:

Audi Gentleman's Racer »

Every now and then, you come across a design that just blows you away. Like the Audi Gentleman's racer concept made by Mikael Lugnegård. I just have to get one of those!

From Pencil to Print to Pencils »

Many journalists used to jot down their articles with a pencil, before it was converted into a printed newspaper. These days, the role of the pencil vs. newspaper has been reversed.

The Real Pay Wall »

Newspapers continue to struggle making their printed newspapers profitable (a losing battle), but here is an idea. Why not turn it into a rather nice looking wall covering? This is probably the only pay wall that actually works!

The New Audi A7 Sportback »

Yesterday, Audi revealed their new Audi A7 Sportback. Audi is a master of subtle design (much like Apple), the new A7 isn’t drastic in any way, it’s design simple, yet it convey a very strong image. The only real change is the design of the back trunk.

Spout Lamp »

There is something intriguing and very odd about combining water fixtures and lamps. I wrote about the rough looking lamp, made of steel pipes, a while ago, but now you can get a similar lamp in a more contemporary design.

Hollywood Sign Hotel »

The famous Hollywood sign in California was in deep trouble last month. Fox River Financial Resources, the company who owns it, wanted to divide that land up into five sites for $40 million luxury homes - effectively taking down the sign to make room.

Remember The Skelewags? »

Many moons ago, back in August 2007, I posted a very popular article about the Skelewags. They are a number of very creative drawings made by Richard Vermaak. Now, the Skelewags are back - big time!

Pixels - in New York »

Here is something for all you classic gaming geeks. What if all the old gaming characters from the 1980s broke out and started rampaging through New York?

iPad case Indiana Jones Style »

It was already late in the afternoon when the two horsemen came riding into the camp from the north. Indy was in his tent resting when he heard that familiar deep bellow that he had known for so many years. "Indy!" the baritone called out. Immediately Indy was on his feet and walking outside.

TravelTeq - Laptop Bags »

There are a ton of very beautiful laptop bags on the market, but sometimes you still see something that stands above the crowd. This is the case with these laptop bags from TravelTeq.
