Bike Helmets for City Dwellers

Published: July 06, 2008 in design » cool by Thomas Baekdal

In the past, bicycle helmets made you look like you were wearing a big sponge on top of your head. Today that are all pretty well designed. Most helmets though have a very sporty look, like these from Giro. And while they are certainly cool, it doesn't really fit well with the city-dwellers.

But the Danish company Yakkay is making a very different kind of bike helmet. It is basically a "normal" helmet "shell", which you then extend with a cover in 4 different textile designs. And they are absolutely stunning.

Apart from the overall design, the cover is just "a cover", so you can change it based on your mood or the season. On a cold day you will probably go for the knitted "Izmir" cover, while on hot summer days, the "Paris" cover might be a better choice.

This is a great example of design being used to make something more desirable.

Nice..^^ if this does not get people to start taking care of them selvs in traffic I dont know what will...i mean pretty much all people would'nt want to were a helmet, but the same lame excusse: it looks stupid...well this is a great idea. In Copenhagen alot of people ride around with BMX helmets, but still it looks kind of dumb, because they dont look like people whom actualy can ride a BMX bike^^ good stuff^^

So instead of being called a "biker", you'll be called "that retard who wears a hat with a strap"?

Only retards wear helmets, why wear a helmet for a bicycle?

what next? wear a helmet for the toilet? if wearing a helmet for a motorcycle wasn't law most people wouldn't wear one for them

@Fatty

...you will only need a helmet once if you get my drift and if that one time you don't wear it THEN you WILL become a retard at best if not dead. btw I ride a motorcycle and I always wear a hemlet.

To all you immature people who claim only retards wear helmets: I think you're the retards.

Have a chat with someone who had an accident and wasn't wearing a helmet (if they can still talk) before judging its use.

Might as well not wear a seatbelt either.
