This cartoon concept by "Chewie" is great - mixing real world environments with cartoon characters. The style with skull like cartoon figures are not that special, but the overall style is.
"Chewie" has been very quiet about what this project is really about. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Photoshop or not, this work is really creative and appealing. I enjoyed the placement of characters and found them truly engaging.

I liked it a lot. I agree with others it seems like it would have been just a little cooler had they been drawn on the actual surfaces-or at least half and half and blend them together. Good job though.....certainly gives me good ideas.

does it really matter if it's photoshopped or not? i'd think there's lots of cities that this would be considered grafitti and it would be hard to actually get permission to paint on city property, so i don't see why taking a photo and painting an image into it is a problem, it's still a form of art, you're just using something other than a blank canvas to make it on.

Unless you mean that it's been done on a wall outside, just like all graffiti. In which case it's identical to all graffiti artists.

Second, Id like to add that this is not -fake-, since the artist in question doesn't claim that these are pictures of actual walls with the art already on there. The way I read the introduction, it was quite clear that the artist used real-world pictures and combined it with digital artistry.
Dear GOD! Everytime I go to a site and there is a comment section somebody always says " That's photoshopped" What the hell! Not every damn picture on the internet is done in photoshop! I think your brain is photoshopped!
The introduction on top led me to believe that the cartoons are edited into the photos; hence the word "concept". I don't think that takes away from the idea; in fact I like that better than thinking he did graffiti.
Also the reflection on the water is nice, but not that hard to do.

Okay - let's settle down a bit.
As the author= of this article, but not the creator of the artwork I cannot tell if it is photoshopped or not - nor do I think it is really important.
But, let me clear up one big misconception. I wrote the text "cartoon concept", not Chewie. I didn't use that word because I thought it was photoshopped, but instead because the final work is still "under construction".
But let me say, that I am more impressed If it is made in Photoshop. One thing is to draw the cartoons, and come up with the idea - that is art in itself. Being able to create this level of realistic texture effects in Photoshop is amazing in itself.
Again, as the author= of this article, I cannot tell how it was made. I have tried contacting "Chewie", but he sadly keeps his real identity a secret.
As for Banksy being a sell out.. I'm really sick of artists getting flack for making money. It's a profession. It's a difficult one to succeed in. When someone does well because they know how to promote themselves and make a career for themselves, it's not selling out, it's succeeding.
I couldn't care less what it is or how it was done. I just adore it and wish I could own some so that I could look at it all the time.

I suspect that these may very well have been photoshopped, but the problem I have with people doubting the authenticity of a photo. is that there is the implied notion or belief that these works couldn't be done w/o photoshop. Well Please understand-These works could have been(and May Have been) produced by any one of thousands of competent street artists who choose to work in this style. So yeah, maybe this was photochoppd, but don't be sitting behind your screen thinkn that actually painting this would be impossible, when people I know could produce this much work in less than an hour's time, collectively.

This is really cool and all. I think it is a terrific form of art. It is however photoshop. You can tell by the reflections of the characters in the water. They are flat and the ripples int he water have no effect on how they look. Anyone who has ever looked into a lake or stream knows that the motion of the watter affects the reflection being seen.
All you had to do was flip and rotate and then mess with the opacity of the character to gain the reflection affect. So yes it is indeed cool but its photoshop and not actually painted on the surfaces shown.

i think these are definately created in photoshop, or some similar program, but that doesnt meant they are "fake". i see it a modern mixed media, and as such has no less value than a "real" piece of work
Nowhere in the post does it say that these pictures were not Photoshopped. I don't think the artist intended to imply that the drawings were done on the actual real-world environment, rather the environments were photographed and the artist used the unique textures and details to improvise a cartoon setting.
Why is there an innate need to prove something so obviously cool as a "fake"? Even if it was presented as reality, and found to be a "fake", it would still be more artistic and intelligent than anything most of us could come up with.
If you visit the web page - skelewags.com (under construction unfortunately) you'll see immediately that this is not photoshopped. I also suggest that a lot of you need to do some research before posting. Google came back with 10,000+ returns directly related to these images, Those I check supported the artist and his work, it is NOT photoshopped. Get over yourselves.
This is not a copy of Tim Burton. Tim burton used primarily clay-mation. this is closer to the skeleanimals series. Sure it has a Tim Burton flaire to it, but I dont see it as a "copy of his work". I also have to agree with Pete Nawara. There is an astronomical difference between selling out and succeeding. You people as artists should realize this. If someone offered you money for your works of art and you accepted it, by your own definition you would be selling out. But these are my own, personal, and probably skewed opinions. The opinions of an art adoring drummer.
Art is art is art, and whether photoshop or graffitti, this is art. The characters are great and the artwork is funny and original. Personally I believe these are real paintings and not photoshopped. Then again, I dont really care either way, they made me smile after a hard days work and THAT'S what art is about...making you feel..

Should it matter whether it's photoshopped or not? The artist didn't swear that it wasn't photoshopped or that it was. The point is that someone had the creativity to do it and it looks great! I love it!! How is photoshop more fake than say, stencilling or tracing? Or even Painting or sketching? Digital Arts is a form or art!! The characters are originals, and the idea is original and that's what counts.

Honestly, i do photoshop, and i can tell this isn't. You can see the grain of the wall in the pictures. and you can see the waves of the different colors from the wall show up a bit in the pictures. Geeze people, pul your head out of the sand and for once, accept the fact that some people have talent.

it is done in photoshop. but again i think its really really inventive!! it would be nice to see this artist progress and get the same clarity on the actual surfaces!!! i personally think it would take too long as they are very detailed, that is one of the reasons why banksy's art is produced with stencils!! quick and easy (if u would call it that) and less chance of getting caught! or the artist could just practice at photoshop!! and we would never know!!! :-)

It is actually more like Eward Gorey...also the illustrator of The Series of Unfortunate Events is closer than Bansky...no stencils.
I can tell for a fact that is photoshopped. Some of the work on the broken concrete is unreal. No way can you achieve that contrast and detail on such a canvas. But don't be confused. I like the piece regardless if is fake. A lot of things in this world are not what they appear to be, but that doesn't stop you from enjoying art - created digitally or not.

I love them. As a photographer (digital and analog), I like the photos as well as what chewies done with them.
These seem like photoshop work simply because of scale. To do these in real life with spray paint would be damn near impossible, so chewie would have had to have been sitting there with acrylics or something. Not that it couldnt have gone down that way, just that its not a quick way to do something and speed is graffitis best friend.
Im impressed either way.

I really don't know why Photoshop is seen as the devil to most people. It's obvious that someone has taken some pictures of various scenes that feature good textures and used them for their own artwork at a later date. Just because the images aren't real, it doesn't make them any less cool. Purposely, I like photoshopped work just as much as unedited photos.
if they were done Adobe Illustrator no one would have a problem so why kick up a fuss about the use of Photoshop which is made by the same people and has a very similar interface and requires a similar skill set to yous

2. Those of you who think its real. Yes. It is real. The artist must have a skilled eye to envision this and a skilled hand to execute it.
What bothers me is that is any of you qualified to say that you know with certainty that it is photoshopped or not?
I think the only ones who have a right to decide are the author= first, anyone who can literally step-by-step recreate the works, or to fail trying (with sufficient experience).

i'd be curious to know what materials to use for this kind of work - would a permanent marker be strong enough to last? grafitti is usually spraypaint and this isn't.

Yeah, it's photoshopped. Why does that make it 'fake'? If he used a canvas and oil painted a picture is it fake? is it not real? Are magazine layouts done on computers not 'real'? Are digital photographs not 'real'?
Why's everyone saying it's not 'real' when they mean it's not 'graffiti'? It's still art, regardless of the medium. So yes. It's real. It exists. If it was printed out and framed it'd still be a piece of artwork. How the hell can you say it's not real? It's an image made by an artist; it's as real as the sun. Plenty of artists work entirely in Photoshop, are their works not real too?
It's only 'fake' if the artist claims that it exists in the real world as graffiti, which he doesn't. So why's everyone so hung up about it being digital? It may not physically exist, but it's still real.
Whether it's "real" or not is moot. Art is subjective. If it's cool to me and shit to you, who cares? Does it matter if a painting is created by an aged master or a 4-year-old if it's evocative?
Who cares what other people think of your work.
If you like it and proud of what you did, then thats all that matters.

Great Work! The character designs are good regardless of influence or tools. The composition and integration into the environments whether digital or traditional is equally good.

It is about the intention. Why must he fake reflections and the weathered surface to try to fool us? If it is drawn after the fact- embrace that. Don't try to fake real.

I started using filters on my photos a couple of years ago and I am amazed as to what can be accomplished with the correct tools.I've wanted to create a form of art for years but did not know how.I was waiting for someone to come along and instruct me,but that never happened.I post my work on several different websites just because it helps me to express myself.I was diagnosed with lupus over 6 years ago and there are some things I can't do anymore.I can't hope to have a career in art or to highly excel..but I have a sense of accomplishment now.

He is obviously very influenced by Tim Burton. Its almost a bit too much like Burton in my opinion.

i've been following Chewie's work for some time now and i am sure he is mildly embarrassed by the amount of puerile flaming that has been going back and forth... if you scroll up you'll notice that Chewie himself laid the debate to rest once and for all... yes it is Photoshop. It's an incredible set of work & the newer pieces are absolutely brilliant. I really admire his talent to characterise and to capture the frozen moment. I think he owes more to Larson than to Burton or Banksy... can no one do skulls these days without immediately being a Burton rip off? I mean if you have actually SEEN Tim Burton's work the only thing that comes CLOSE to this is in The Nightmare Before Christmas where the 2D ghosts appear in the beginning... so from that point of view, sure it looks a bit like Burton's work, but these characters have infinitely more depth and humour to them. As for Banksy, don't get me wrong, I do like what Banksy has done but I have seen a lot of stuff exactly like his or at least very similar to his work around where I live... stencilling requires only a small amount of skill, i know this because i taught students how to stencil when i was teaching at the local college... Photoshop and Illustration by hand requires years of refining... I think that these are indeed works of art and if you really are desperate to compare this to something so that you can say... oh this is rubbish ive seen it all before... and feel good about yourself.. i would say this is more of a Grim Fandango homage than anything else. So i think yeah, if you aren't producing work of this high standard yourself then you have no room to argue... either way i am sure the artist enjoys it for himself and cares very little about what the outside world thinks of his work....
i think you could do well to be in awe of it rather than trying to lessen it by carping about techniques

I had to stand up against a blackboard at a boring art demonstration once. Another guy and I discreetly drew little chalk men in various poses all over a string line drooping across the blackboard and silently amused ourselves for nearly an hour. We walked away and left it. We never met again.
It made me smile when I saw this. It reminded me of that day. Yours are so much better though.
*photoshop is just photoshop - chalk is just chalk - and the gifted artist is just gifted - the tool/medium doesn't give you talent its just what you use on the day.

Look at any pic with water in it. You can see the reflections, skewed by water. That would be incredibly hard to do in Photoshop. Props man, this is really cool art.
From what I had read at the beginning, no ever claimed that this was "on location". It clearly stated that this was mixing real world environments with cartoon characters. Nothing else was ever implied.

Whether it's PhotoShop or graffiti it makes no difference as it's really clever either way.
And FYI if you go through the uptown neighborhood in Minneapolis there's graffiti art all over in the form of art made into stickers. It ranges from the word "war" with a red slash through it to elaborate line art - all made into stickers and placed in highly visible areas.

Ok, this is photoshopped. I should know this, my career revolves around photoshop. This is quite easy to do in real life (aside from escaping graffiti laws after posting these on the internet for author=ities to see), but look closely at the last picture. The female skelewag with her arms spread out is overlapping one of the steel slabs. With the angle this was taken at, there would be a very noticable distortion in the arm where the surface is raised.
Also, look at the safari scene, the croc was purposefully faded in half to make the illusion of water. Doing this with street art utensils is possible, but difficult to pull off that effectively. Cutting the image in half and reducing the opacity would be more effective, and it looks like that is what was done.
And this is NOT a tim burton rip off just because it's a cartoony skeleton done in a twistedly cute way. It is his style, it is PAINTED not claymationed(if that's a word), and by that logic, the grim adventures of bill and mandy are a tim burton rip off as well. Also note how the jaws and the skulls are separated (like the canadians in south park), which tim never did.
But all in all i really admire your creativity and art. Especially the second picture, how did you ever think to make it rain stones? Your perspective must be amazing. I wish i had your brain.
Oh, sara. I'd also like to say that you obviously know nothing of the adobe programs. These pictures could easily be made in illustrator (they would be complicated pieces of lineart, and therefore tedious, but still easy. Especially if frawn first), brought into photoshop for rasterization, and then applied with blending modes and opacity settings.
And i would like to say, i don't have the greatest spelling, so i would like all the "grammar nazis" to do inexplicable things to themselves rather than nitpick my spelling.
Sorry for the third post, but Ian is such a photoshop noob i can't help it. Water effects are some of the EASIEST things to do in photoshop. Also, sorry for bringing up the photoshop debate again, i am reading this backwards from my own posts and didn't know. But at least some people will stop trying to claim "PHOTOSHOPPED" because of things like water reflections. If you want to announce it, present more believable evidence, like that arm.
By the way, Chewie. In the picture where it rains rocks, how did you surface the rock over the umbrella so perfectly?
You have served to greatly inspire me, i would love to see these scenes turned into a cartoon series or a game even. Who knows, i might make one of these for myself.
And also, i would love to see what you can do with photoshop WOW effects (making a picture from a white canvas instead of altering existing images). Right now, i'm working on my own website for my photoshops.

Any great animation or advertisment starts from an idea...
So try and open up more and see the idea behind all the characters thats been put...
Probably am sure out of those all people who have commented that this art work is fake and photoshoped it doenst really matter! Even if it photoshop then what the whank is the bloody problem? I mean try executing the same ideation n art style? Am bet most wont able to....
So stop cribbing and let this artist proove his visual essence and ideas across....

Personally I'd agree with 'drone' in that it definitely reminds me of Grim Fandango and "Dia De Los Muertos" imagery. Sorry, but when did Banksy become the measuring stick all street inspired artists, graffiti has been around since the late 70's - get educated.
I love how some people's first reaction is to determine whether or not it is hand drawn or done utilising a certain Adobe product. Like it actually matters.

The way the still image has been combined with the cartoon humour is really good, and even if it is done with the help of photoshop, it is still drawing and it requires a lot of skill.

God, someone does a design with skulls and someone automatically thinks it's "heavily influenced by Nightmare Before Christmas" Is that the only thing you've ever seen with skulls in it?
Listen this is great, it is new...however it was done is not important, also you can sit around and compare every artist to another what sets them apart is their innovation and style! Big ups to "Chewie" keep it up!!!

Secondly anyone arguing its not art, unless its all a photo proberly wasnt around when people thought photos where a perversion of (what they thought was"reel art", > drawing, painting). The same can be said for 3d after pictures anf film where created. Arguing about what is art is pointless. The moment u try to define art as something that is more specifc then "something created by human thought" u will fail, and in time look foolish.
From what I understand he has used very much untouched pictures, the only photoshop work being for the drawings, so feeling of the back drop is a very natural one, as for the drawings. Very clever concept and enough fun things going on with the charicters to please most nerds like me who enjoy the little details. It would sit happily next to my Ralph Steadman book! sry for spelling
