Olympic Torch Design Special

Much can be said about this year's Olympics and China, but if you forget the politics for a moment, you will suddenly see all the stunning design.

A number of my readers have pointed me towards the Olympic Torch, not only because it looks amazing, but also - and this is the real point - because it is designed by Lenovo.

Some of you might remember my article about the Lenovo X300 Thinkpad, which I characterized as:

The ThinkPad series is a conclusive statement of "status-quo", "non-design", "never trying", "no innovative spirit" and complete dullness for your eyes.

- from: Lenovo X300 is not a cool computer

So I am much surprised to learn that something as beautiful as the Olympic Torch comes from the same people who make one the most boring looking laptops on the planet.

But there is no way around it. Lenovo can make stunning design, and employs a group of top class designers. The 2008 Olympic Torch is, in my opinion, a work of art.

The Olympic Laptop

Lenovo has also designed an Olympic inspired laptop. When I first heard about it, I thought it was just going to be an ugly looking ThinkPad painted in a different color, but nooo... Lenovo has actually designed a laptop with interesting design elements. I am not sure I would call it pretty, but it is designed.

I really like the design of the Olympic torch, but I didn't know there was also a laptop. So I guess you don't like the thinkpad series? They do have the image of being top of the line laptops. Some even have a motion detector that switches of the harddrives when the laptop is picked up and moved (same wi th falling). But yeah, they do look a bit boring.

The swirling design elements used in Beijing Olympics 2008 have been exclusively created and used by Artist Sudi Narayan from Atlanta, USA since 90's. See his website http://www.artofsudi.com (Art of Sudi)
